What is even real anymore?
I was going to write about regaining some hope and ground this week. About doing better. Then I heard about Rosie O’Donnell tonight. And all my worst fears came back. Maybe we really do need an asteroid saviour.
So trans persecution and erasure isn’t enough. Now US born lesbians can have their citizenship threatened to be revoked. Honestly, I don’t know what to say anymore except I fucking told you so. And this, because apparently we’ve all forgotten:
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
~Martin Niemöller
Martin Niemöller was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian born in Lippstadt, Germany, in 1892. Niemöller was an anti-Communist and supported Adolf Hitler's rise to power. But when Hitler rose to power and insisted on the supremacy of the state over religion, Niemöller became disillusioned. He became the leader of a group of German clergymen opposed to Hitler. In 1937 he was arrested and eventually confined in Sachsenhausen and Dachau. He was released in 1945 by the Allies.

When reality feels uncertain, the Ground Wave reminds us: breath is real, presence is real.
Peace is not found by proving what is real, but by resting in what never leaves the living moment.
There was a version of this that my English teacher had on her wall in seventh grade. I have been thinking about that so much lately. Powerful and true statement!
